Wow thats fast. Imaged to another internal HDD? I image to USB drives, so a bit of a bottleneck there.

I always rip to MP3, usually 256 kps or 128 kps depending on my mood. Never tried WMA.

See here for a bit more info:

I keep all documents and personal files on another drive and point MyDocuments to it.

I overestimated the speed. I just made an image and it took 20 minutes to write and verify. I do image to an internal drive.

"Putting Registry-/system-cleanup apps to the test"

windowssecrets.com

"The primary takeaway from these tests is that use of any cleanup tool — even the free, built-in cleanmgr — can help fight bloat and improve your system performance over what you get if you simply uninstall an application"

table 3 summarizes the tests

Depending on what I'm doing, I rip CDs to .MP3 or .WAV files. I never use .WMA.

MP3 will work on almost all devices and they're DRM (Digital Rights Management) free.

Audio Grabber will rip CDs: audiograbber.org

For Audio Grabber to work with .MP3 files, a tiny package, Lame, is needed.

Get Lame here: heinzle.co.at

Format Factory will convert: pcfreetime.com  or formatoz.com

Both are free downloads. Audio Grabber doesn't try to install "extras." Format Factory does, but it asks you first. You must un-check THREE boxes; "I accept. . ." "Make Ask my. . ." and "Set my homepage. . ." before clicking Finish.

Bye4Now, FD.

P.S. I tried repeatedly to duplicate the Windows 7 Player behaviour you describe. When I re-insert a CD, the Rip option is grey, but once I select a track, the Rip option returns to normal.

Do you overwrite images or keep more than one?

I don't keep all my images. Once I have restored an image and know it works and all the installed programs and their settings are what I need I will delete previous images to make room for the future. I probably average having 4 images to fall back on if needed.

I would keep at least 2 images. On my desktop I keep about 20, will never go that far back if I need to restore, farthest I have gone back to restore was 2 weeks once, but on my notebooks I only keep about 4-5 images for each notebook, and rotate them, so they are on different external hard drives in case one fails.

Example USB drive 1, create an image to it, next time, use USB drive 2 and so on. This way if one drive fails you have a another copy, just to be safe.
