I'm still on 3.6.17 and when I clicked on HELP, I saw that FF is downloading 3.6.18.

I trust that FF4 is no longer available; and I will end up going directly to 5.

Keep the comments coming on FF5. While I don't want to be a pioneer (they took the most arrows), I hadn't wanted to be a Luddite neither. ;)

My old laptop died; I was using it solely for streaming charts during market hours, so I don't need a powerful machine to replace it, just something minimal with a 15" display. Best Buy has good deals on these two, both $379.99.

Any thoughts, experiences, recommendations?

Dale,

I use desktops. I switched from Dell To HP about 18 months ago.
HP provides much higher quality sound than I ever got from Dell (XPS models).

Several people here have commented that HP laptops are horridly unreliable. That has not been my experience with the HP desk top I have.

If all else were equal, I'd definitely go for the 4GB Dell or strongly consider upgrading the memory on the HP. As the operating systems and streamers evolve, I can almost guarantee that they won't become more efficient in their memory usage.

Good luck,
Ian

I would pass on both, get a Toshiba C655, you can still get the old models I seen at Radio Shack:

Toshiba® Satellite® C655-S5139 15.6" AMD Vision Laptop
$369.99

I bought an HP laptop that I had to return 24 hours later due to numerous problems that I didn't want to fuss with; replaced that with my current Dell Studio, which has run like a top with zero problems except for a CD player that can be a little wonky when it's cold (i hardly use it anyway).

The HP got a good mention for the AMD E chip with embedded graphics. I don't know if that would be enough to tip the balance or not.

It's a close call.

Cheeky, Best Buy has that Toshiba for only $299 but it had terrible reviews from several buyers. Maybe yours is an exception, I don't know, I never owned a Toshiba except for a nice small LCD TV in our kitchen.

All computer makers have duds, I bot a Toshiba C650 499 bucks back in Oct 2010, one of the best notebooks I have owned. The last notebook I bot was 3800 bucks. I like the Toshiba better.

Toshiba just announced a new line, once available in Canada I am going for a Intel i7 17.2 inch notebook. I really like Toshiba. Tried a 3 others, had problems, they were Lenovo Thinkpad, Dell XPS15, Asus N series. All in the 1200-1700 dollar range.

Be careful what people are complaining about, sometimes its not the computers problem.

For stock quotes there is nothing wrong with this on below, careful on these comments, you get people buying these computers and they want to do multimedia work on them or gaming, then give them a bad review, this is a basic notebook only it won't do heavy work loads. Good for web and stock quotes:

$299.99

makes sense >The type of malware we are talking about would normally not block booting. That would remove any chance of them getting paid for their hijacking your computer.<

Thanks for the link!

Running FF5 on my notebook all is fine, had to update one add on. I notice they want to get rid of FF4 as fast as possible, if you are running FF4 and go to About, it will automatically download version 5 ready to install.

Keeping FF4 on my desktop until some addons can get up to date.
