I ran regedit last Saturday and ever since, a number of applications will not run. "Cannot find any video capture device" is the error statement shown when trying to run the applications.

I'm not sure what to make of this. Thoughts? TIA.

Hi cow,

A few days ago I asked for help in trying to fix a mouse pointer that would "stick" and then "jump" to catch up with the position of the mouse. I found that defraging the hard drive resolved the problem.

I wanted to post the solution as a number of people gave me different solutions to the problem.

That's strange, how many times would the mouse drivers have to access the drive? Even if programs would have to access the drive more often because it needed a defrag, I can't see that make the mouse jump.

Cheap memory: bought 1GB PC 5300 Crucial desktop memory [single module] at Fry's for $20 after rebate. I think the sale ends Tuesday. Store price was $40

They also had 160 GB external disk drives for $50 [Seagate and Maxtor One-touch]

I too found it odd that defraging the drive would fix the problem. I would have expected a driver problem, or some other conflict in the software. Oh well, at least it seems to be working fine now.

Thanks for your interest and help.

Thanks for posting what worked. I would not have thought there was any chance that would do any good but figured why post a comment like that so I didn't. I still can't see any connection between a defrag and your mouse sticking but who knows? Some strange things happen!

You might want to consider going with an Optical Mouse. I just did that on my two machines and love them. Very responsive and NO sticky feeling like I had with the old roller type mice.

Hi Ken,

The mouse that I'm using is an optical one. The sticking that I reported was not with the mouse as such, it was the pointer on the monitor. When I moved the mouse, the pointer would follow, but at times it would stick and then jump to catch up with the mouse.

I checked my hard drive for fragmentation and the report came back that I should defrag the drive, which I did. I then noticed that the pointer no longer stuck. Why defraging helped I just don't know. That's the way it goes at times.

I couldn't agree more. At times a computer seems to have a mind of it's own. I would have thought the problem might be related to a driver or something went wrong with the mouse.

Oh well, it's now working, so I'll leave well enough alone.
