Stricker was -5 for his last 5 holes, and -10 for the day to take the lead.

Kevin Na ended eagle, eagle for -9 to wind up in 3rd.

The time difference drove the on-air time, IMO.

OT while Steve Stricker rolls on

If you un-ban me from PfP, I'd like to reply to U.S. bashing like this:

Figuring on each unemployed person has an average of him/her self plus 3 other dependents, that would mean there are about One Hundred MILLION Americans that are feeling the effects of Obama's total nonsense ideas about finding and keeping jobs....PLUS all the businesses that these folks purchase goods and services from....

This would be about 1/3 of our TOTAL population....

Still, all told, 23.7 million Americans are either out of work or underemployed.

Why?

If it would be correct to multiply the negative impact of the unemployed by 3, then it is correct to multiply the positive impact of those employed by 3. And the average workweek was up and the average pay per hour was up in December.

False statements, by KLP or snyone else, should be discouraged.

Does KLP really think that the Employment Report only counts Americans?

Finchem On First Tee Expansion: "We have set out on a course to raise $100 million this year"

Answering a question at Kapalua about future plans, Commissioner Tim Finchem has planned now that the television contract is finished, he revealed what many had feared: a ramping of The First Tee investment and hype. From the transcript:

The opportunity to grow The First Tee Program, which has reached 4.7 million kids in the United States since 1997, teaching core values through the game of golf. We have set out on a course to raise $100 million this year so that we can reach 10 million new kids in the next six years, and that will culminate at Pebble Beach on October 8.

If that is successful, we think that it not just reaches a lot of kids and not just reaches millions of kids with the game of golf and helps them by teaching them core values; but also The First Tee Program is very diverse, women and minorities make up significant percentages, and it helps us go down that road of making sure that golf is something that's successful to everybody.

Imagine the impact the tour would have if they took $50 million of this hoped-for funding and put it into a green fee subsidy program like Youth On Course, and then put the other $50 million into saving/restoring 15 classic muni's in disrepair? I know, I know, the kids wouldn't learn get exposed to the core values..."

Pebble Beach to serve as Tiger's 2012 PGA Tour debut Woods to return to California pro-am for first time in 10 years By Mark Soltau / TigerWoods.com

Tiger last appeared at Pebble Beach in the 2010 U.S. Open, where he tied for fourth. Tiger Woods will make his 2012 PGA Tour debut at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Feb. 9-12, he announced Monday. It will mark his first appearance since 2002.

"I'm excited to start my PGA Tour season at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am," Woods said. "AT&T is a great partner to my Foundation, and I'm looking forward to playing in this event. I haven't been to this tournament lately, but I have a lot of good memories at Pebble. It will be fun going back."

His fondest recollections are from 2000, when he came from five strokes back in the final round of the AT&T to edge Matt Gogel. Four months later, he won the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach by a record-breaking 15 shots.

"It's always been one of my favorite spots," said Woods, who first saw the breathtaking property with his late father, Earl, when he was playing junior golf. "It might be the prettiest place on earth."

Woods, who will begin his new season Jan. 26 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, at the HSBC Championship, last played at Pebble Beach in the 2010 U.S. Open, where he tied for fourth.

Two major changes have occurred in the AT&T tournament since he last competed. The field has been reduced from 180 pros and amateurs to 156, which has improved the pace of play. In addition, the Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula Country Club has replaced Poppy Hills Golf Course in the three-course rotation, which includes Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill Golf Course.

"I've never played Monterey Peninsula and am looking forward to it," Woods said. "From all I've heard, it's a wonderful course and the greens are fast."

Woods concluded the 2011 season by winning his Foundation's tournament at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif., snapping a two-year winless drought. He opens 2012 with 84 worldwide victories, including 71 PGA Tour titles and 14 major championships.

"It was great to finish 2011 strong," said Woods. "More importantly, it's good to be healthy again, and I'm hoping to get off to a fast start."

Well, somebody came to their senses and moved the starting times way back so the Hyundai
tournament will not air at the same time as the BCS game.

Stricker currently on the first tee.

I would guess that most of the players wanted to see the game too.

The tournament was never scheduled to go head to head against BCS, don't know where that rumor started. Here was the TV schedule that was posted on Jan 2nd:

I saw/heard a GC promo on NBC, driving traffic to what will be the replay tonight. If the BCS is lopsided, GC will get a decent audience.

"Golf World Tour Players Course Ranking: Augusta #1

John Antonini reports in Golf World Monday that Augusta National landed in the top spot of Golf World (or anyone else's) first ever PGA Tour player ranking. I can confirm this is correct as this has been a special project in the works for over a year, with reporting work done mostly by Craig Dolch and the package pieced together by yours truly.

I'm scheduled to appear on Thursday's Morning Drive to discuss the player list and their comments, followed by an 11 a.m. ET appearance with Peter Kessler on Sirius 208/XM 93.

And if that's not enough talking, there will be a GolfDigest.com podcast that will help launch the online coverage of the ranking, though print subscribers will get the real treat: our Zagat style summary of each course, with the best player comments featured on all 52 eligible courses."

"Tim Finchem gets four-year contract extension
Wednesday, January 11, 2012 Comments (0)

When I see the name "Tim Finchem" appear on my cell phone, I stop what I'm doing to take the call. He is, after all, the commissioner of the PGA Tour, and he doesn't call me all that often. A couple weeks before this particular phone call, when he announced the new nine-year TV deal with CBS and NBC, I asked Tim what it might mean for his future, knowing that his contract expired in June 2012. He said he'd get back to me. And he did.

"If I am feeling good, if the players are comfortable with the idea and if the board is willing, I will stay on," Finchem, who turns 65 in April, told me that day last September. Well, apparently Tim feels good and the players are comfortable with the idea because today the PGA Tour Policy Board announced a four-year extension of Finchem's contract through June 2016.

"Under Tim's leadership, and that of his executive team, the PGA Tour has achieved many very significant accomplishments," Victor Ganzi, chairman of the Policy Board, said in a release announcing Finchem's contract extension. "Tim has positioned the tour for continued growth in areas such as prize money, charity, sponsor value and growing the game around the world, and we are fortunate that he has agreed to continue as commissioner another four years."

All of that is true. The PGA Tour survived the recession so well in part because many years ago Finchem told players that they shouldn't want every nickel of incoming revenue to go back out in prize money. He urged them to put some of it away in a war chest for the inevitable rainy day. This guy was an economist for President Jimmy Carter. He knows about rainy days.

That deluge came in September 2008 when the global economy collapsed. During the economic downturn, the PGA Tour was able to float four tournaments and get them through to the other side.

Two of those -- the stops at Palm Springs and Hilton Head -- now have vibrant new sponsors in Humana, the health benefits provider, and the Clinton Foundation for what was the Bob Hope and the Royal Bank of Canada for the Heritage at Harbour Town.

Since taking over from Deane Beman in 1994, Finchem has also been instrumental in the development of the World Golf Hall of Fame, The First Tee, The International Federation of Tours and the creation of the World Golf Championships, the FedEx Cup and the shared charity initiative with players under the tagline, "Together, Anything's Possible."

When Finchem took over in 1994, the total purse on the PGA Tour was $56.4 million. Last year it was $280 million. A month after Tiger Woods won the 1997 Masters by 12 strokes and pulled a Sunday TV rating of 14.1 -- the largest ever for a golf tournament -- Finchem sat the network folks down and negotiated a TV deal that increased prize money from $96.4 million in 1998 to $135 million in 1999.

Yes, he had Tiger to market, but he and his team knew how to market him. In many ways, Finchem is like Paul Tagliabue, who took over as NFL commissioner after Pete Rozelle stepped down. Tim was handed a very good product by Beman and his job was, first off, to not mess it up, and then to figure out how to make it better. He did both, and that is not as easy as Finchem's critics would like to make it seem.

One of the side benefits of the nine-year TV deal -- the CBS, NBC and Golf Channel contracts now expire simultaneously in 2021 -- is that the tour can extend Finchem's contract four years and still have five years for his successor to get his feet on the ground before the next TV talks.

"The important thing to remember is that no matter what happens with me, the team did such a great job in extending our title sponsorships and making this TV contract happen will still be in place," Finchem told me in that September phone call. "They are a wonderfully talented group."

Now, that group will have Finchem at the helm for four more years. And that can only be a good thing. Who knows what TV delivery will look like in 2021? Finchem has brought the PGA Tour to the brink of a new frontier. Now he will lead them a few steps further before handing over the reigns to someone else. That stability is a large part of the PGA Tour's strength
