I like this decision. There is no place for trash talk on the soccer field, so it's about time FIFA started cracking down on it.

I put trash talkers down there in the lower circles of hell with the the other scum, like players who boast about having fooled the ref and gotten away with a hand ball.

What if a players stares angrily at another player? Should there be a suspension there too? After all, sports is supposed to be about brotherly love, tea and biscuits, apple pie, isn't it?

Problem is if you take away diving and trash talking you take away most of the Italian game.

You still never mentioned what makes up your genetic cesspool. Don't worry about the math. We'll add up the fractions.

No, sport is about athleticism and teamwork. It's not about trash talking, which should be punished harshly. IMO those who engage in trash talking are scum who have no place on the field.

Then punish every single athlete in every single sport. Why single out one individual for doing the same thing the aggressor (head-butter) has done himself many times before?

Sticks and stones....

I'm hoping Materazzi's punishment is the beginning of the crackdown on this unacceptable behaviour which has been let slide.

And just because you think "every athlete" trash talks -- the ones I respect like Markus Naslund, Vernon Wells, and Steve Nash don't -- that doesn't make it right.

Mores change. It used to be socially semi-acceptable if illegal to drive drunk, but at least in Canada where I live, no one makes excuses for it any more, and people would have no compunction reporting their friends if they won't give up the keys.

It is now an institution:

<Jockey Apologizes for Head-Butting Horse
Tuesday, July 25, 2006 8:14 AM EDT
The Associated Press

LONDON (AP) — Jockey Paul O'Neill apologized Tuesday for head-butting his horse at a race last weekend.

The Horseracing Regulatory Authority is holding an inquiry after reviewing TV footage of the incident at the Stratford races on Sunday.

"I would just like to say to the public that I'm very sorry they had to see such a thing," O'Neill said in a statement. "I've never done it before and it will never happen again."

City Affair was being unruly in the parade ring, ultimately throwing O'Neill. The jockey got to his feet and grabbed the reins, pulling the horse to him, before lowering the butt of his helmet into it.

"When I got to the start he headed straight for a car with me, stopped five feet from the car, whipped round and dropped me," O'Neill said. "I landed on my feet, but a bit awkwardly for my knee and I was a little bit angry then, but I've never done anything like this before and I'm glad to say the horse is OK after it."

"Angry jockey does a 'Zidane' to his horse," read the headline of London's Evening Standard, referring to French soccer star Zinedine Zidane's infamous head-butt in the World Cup final.

City Affair went on to finish fourth in the two-mile event. O'Neill was given a caution by stewards for his use of the whip in the race.

O'Neill's actions will be reviewed at an HRA disciplinary hearing on Aug. 3, where he is expected to face a fine and short ban.

The 26-year-old O'Neill, who has ridden 51 winners, was questioned by the HRA over his ride of a novice hurdler in March.>

Rumour has it that the horse called the jockey a terrorist and may have made remarks about his mother.

Witnesses on the scene said they saw the horse give the hoof to the jockey which provoked the head-butt.
