While I'm here, and since it's a daytrades/investments board, a favorite lately has been WPL. I've been flipping a tiny amount in a trading account, have a sizable position in my long-term account (gotta love the 6% dividend).

It had some REAL interesting options activity today and what made it extra weird to me is that I'd decided to take the plunge on some Oct $10 calls strictly for a quick flip.

Check out this chain for September:

CALL OPTIONS Expire at close Fri, Sep 21, 2007

Strike Symbol Last Chg Bid Ask Vol Open Int
7.50 WPLIU.X 3.30 0.70 3.10 3.30 1,176 71
10.00 WPLIB.X 0.70 0.00 0.80 1.40 80 167
12.50 WPLIV.X 0.15 0.00 N/A 0.50 22 689
15.00 WPLIC.X 0.05 0.00 N/A 0.10 1,000 1,915

PUT OPTIONS Expire at close Fri, Sep 21, 2007

Strike Symbol Last Chg Bid Ask Vol Open Int
7.50 WPLUU.X 0.25 0.00 N/A 0.35 0 35
10.00 WPLUB.X 0.90 0.00 0.20 0.70 295 253
12.50 WPLUV.X 2.65 0.00 1.85 2.30 650 665
15.00 WPLUC.X 4.20 0.20 4.00 4.50 1,000 1,908
17.50 WPLUW.X 7.52 0.00 6.40 7.30 100 100

Weird or what? Very little open interest in the front month and in one day the total options volume (on both sides) is substantially higher than the total open interest.

MVIS - for sale?

According to Simon Collins, Chief Executive of KPMG Corporate Finance, merger and acquisition activity will pick up strongly next year. Analyst Sean Udall says this will be especially true in the tech arena. This brings up the thought of the potential acquisition of Microvision. With its foot in several top tech venues, and its small size, MVIS looks like a fruit ready to be plucked.

By whom?

Samsung is a company that is engaged in the cell phone and printer businesses. Microvision would make a nice fit for Samsung.

Epson? Epson and Microvision have collaborated on a variety of patents, particularly in the laser printer/scanner field.

Motorola? With a joint venture underway, MOT would seem a likely suitor.

However, one must also give strong consideration to Nokia.

Nokia favors innovation more than most companies, and it likes to have “keen control over its own manufacturing” according to one analyst. That means that if Nokia wants to successfully incorporate the big screen into their product, they need to purchase the company that makes the screen (the screen being a major component going forward). Nokia cannot purchase someone like TI, but they could well scoop up MVIS.

And what about Hewlett Packard? This tech mammoth doesn’t want to be left out in the rain, especially if the printer and endoscope elements pan out.

And finally, GE must be added to the list. MVIS’ CEO and a variety of managers hail from GE, and GE is expanding into new fields right now.

There are several potential buyers for MVIS and we may well see a grab for its assets and IP portfolio in the coming 18 months.

"Why Apple Must Buy Microvision"
Apple's image relies on being the most "hip" in technology - the first to market with wondrous new products that dazzle the world. That is exactly why Apple must purchase Microvision. Microvision's hot new technology could end up being used first in another company's cell phones - and that just won't do. Will Apple miss out on the next wave of technological change? Will it suddenly be leapfrogged by another tech player? A Hewlett Packard? Nokia? Motorola? Roger Crockett of BusinessWeek notes that it would be stunning if someone like Motorola "can leagfrog the competition with innovative new products." How would the ultimate "cool" tech geek, Steve Jobs, handle that? Apple has a reputation for having to have all of its product in house and under its thumb, so that means buying, not joint ventures. And that means if they want into the new big screen game, they gotta buy their way in. It is vital for the next wave for them. And if they want to grab Microvision, they will have to do it soon. With the launch of the ROV and the ensuing and increasing corporate familiarity with Microvision, the game becomes more high stakes.
