i put the shutdown icon on my w98 quicklaunch toolbar, which means i can close windows with one click.

are you aware of a similar shortcut for restarting windoze?

:)

This seems to be on topic (at least for right now)
articulateimages.com
the link leads to a number of programs which address the shutdown issues currently being discussed. One program addresses what to to when the shutdown command via windows is inoperable.

hi rob,

i found that to be a real useful site, thanks. i downloaded and installed shutz 2000.

jthz.com

it puts a red 's' in the systray and i left click it once to shut down and right click it once to reboot. looks pretty straightforward and hopefully doesn't add any bugginess to my system.

thanks again

:)

fwiw...

and as follow up, after installing shutz 2000 last night, i have good news and bad news.

bad news is the "click left to shutdown" has caused windoze to hang twice. (it has also worked fine 2-3 times.) i never had shutdown hangs prior to shutz 2000.

the good news is that the "click right to restart" has worked fine each time.

you might say, well that's a lot of times to be shutting down and rebooting in such a short period <g3>. but i am kinda' test driving the freeware, and i also tend to shut down a lot more than i used to because of increased awareness of cable modem vulnerability.

anyway, i will keep shutz 2000 around for awhile for restart purposes and use the "C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE user.exe, exitwindows" shortcut in my quicklaunch toolbar for one-click shutdowns.

:)

Abit BH6's also support the new Celeron2's with a good slotket (I use the MSI Master stotket). The 566 C2's are pretty good overclockers to 850. They run just a tiny bit faster than PIII 700's.

This is getting better all the time. If I buy the Cel2 566 and o/c it to 850 I'll really be in the FAST lane. Let's see now if 300 is all I need for the internet and have 850 I'll have a great ego trip.
Turns out the 300a wasn't such a bad buy after all comparing what I paid for it 18 months ago and what a 450Mhz would have cost. Figure I saved enough to buy a new chip. How's that for a reason to do something I don't need to do?

If you hold down the shift key during a normal restart, you avoid the bios part of the boot routine -- it's about twice as fast.

Re the BH6 upgrade: I have a BH6 myself w/ a Celeron300@450. It's like an old shoe now and I've lost the urge to upgrade. What the previous poster said sounds like a good path, though, and I would be tempted. I also want to get into Win2K, but I think my board is holding me back. What I'd really like is a BP6 with 2 C2's overclocked in the 800 range, running win2K. I think it can be done now, but I haven't checked.

Regarding the problem of the cpu won't overclock anymore: first things that spring to mind are power supply and memory seating (try reseating the memory, making sure that the contacts on board and memory are clean). Other than that I'm at a loss (how unusual).

Anybody running win2K on a BH6?

Mark,
I've never used that catagory of programs but thanks for the feedback. For people that have cable modems that are concerned about security a guy named steve gibson wrote a web page that shows what information your computer is exposing to the world.

WARNING useing the links on the page referenced may cause your system to crash. Mine never has however most people have normal systems <G>.

grc.com

steve also reccomends a program called zone alarm which is a freeware fire wall. I was never able to get it to run reliably on my system however as I said my system isn't normal

Anyway this site (www.grc.com) is a favorite of mine so look around you might find something you like.
Happy investing !.

Edit I don't know why I can't put a link in but guess you'll have to cut and paste. Sorry.

rob,

i'm very familiar with gibson's site. i run his scans and probes to test blackice and norton personal firewall. also have run his 'trouble in paradise' iomega software and also 'optout' freeware. yes, gibson switched recently from advocating blackice to recommending zonealarm.

As far as I've heard the C2 will NOT do SMP, and getting FC-PGA P3's to run on a BP6 using Powerleap Neo S370 adapters is sketchy at best....

The following URL has most of the details:

bp6.gamesquad.net

There are other dual processor boards available now (or very soon) that natively support the FC-PGA format. The new ones typically have 133MHz FSB and at least ATA-66, some even offer RAID and ATA-100.

The (Microstar / MSI) MS-6321 looks interesting in the dual FC-PGA arena spec-wise with ATA-100, 133 FSB, and AGP4X. But I admit I'm not really in the market for one so I haven't been keeping up to see which board is currently "the one to get".

I will agree though, that the ABIT BP6 offered tremendous bang for the buck in its day (dual Celerons with ATA-66 support and excellent overclocking ability). I'm still quite happy with mine, 2 C366 at 528MHz (96MHz FSB and 2.0V).
