John, The background & text Color selection for the very TOP Heading (shades of Yellow) needs something.
By saying the TOP Heading, I mean the very Top Heading that is on Every Page of Silicon Investor. The Blue & Yellow text on shades of Yellow background.

Exactly what it needs, I don't know.

I DO know that I have been looking at it for the last day or so AND the very top (darkest) color of yellow is the worst! It is best described, by me, that it looks like something that would be flushed in your local toilet. It is not very appealing.

I feel that Blue is the best soothing and powerful color that promotes good feelings.
Perhaps shades of Blue instead of Yellow and Bold White or Black (or Yellow) text would work.(??)
Very similar to the far right section. . . Blue background with Yellow text.

"SILICON INVESTOR", at the far left, may be better to be just plain White (or bright shades of Yellow) against the Blue background.(??)
I think it would look very good.

I feel the Yellow-shaded background MUST GO or you will have a lot of very sick users. (literally sick)

Perhaps Yellow text would work. . . I would have to SEE it to know. . . I will leave that up to you.

Anyway, that's my next two bits worth. . . for the time being.

Hope it helps!

Thank you,
Joe

PS, I'm glad to see that you're still using the View Replies linkage (method) I suggested a few months ago.

I've got 2 never-worn, never-washed T-shirts with the color version showing 9 people, with old links to Charts, StockTalk, Groups, Spotlight, and Profiles. And www.techstocks.com in black on the back.

Can anyone easily read the white on yellow date and levels on the DJIA or COMP graphs on the beta3 Home page?

I agree with your assessment of the color, however, you might want to cut back on the curry. <g>

You're right! If the text were a dark color like black, it would be much better & easier to read.

In a similar vein, I've seen a few websites about basic web design who list the top 10 important things to keep in mind when designing websites. Mostly things like "A ton of animated graphics aren't cute; they're annoying." and stuff like that.

Most of them mention color-blindness. That websites should be designed with the understanding that a large number of their visitors will be colorblind to at least a minor degree, making things like red text on a green background a real bad idea. As if it wasn't already.

I've heard it said that as many of 30% of all men have at least a small degree of colorblindness. It's quite rare among women.

Being very color-blind myself has kept me honest when it comes to colors. It's for this reason that I do things like allowing each user to pick what color typos show up in on the Preview screen. For me, it's useless to show them in red because I don't notice they're not black unless I get real close to the screen and scrutinize every word. In my own case, I use #1111ff (which is the default) for typos because it works especially well for me since I use #dddddd (not the default) for my message box color.

It's also my color-blindness that leads to me typically making really drab interfaces. My personalized interface is mostly different shades of gray. I really suck at interfaces, especially when it comes to aesthetics, so I prefer to make it possible for each user to set things up the way they prefer. Not an approach I heartily endorse, though. It's programming and resource intensive. If I remember right, it took me something like 3 months to accomplish it.

A Classic2 (March 2001) option would work for me. Or letting me choose the colors I want.

Hi Bob, Yes, it takes a lot of coding, etc. to allow users to pick their own colors, etc.
In my mind, it should not be too hard to develop with colors that would be accepted by everyone. . .
If the job is done right, you will not here a word about it. . . Yes?

I didn't know you were colored blind. . . my dad was but I am not (thank God).

It bothers me when colors are placed on top of other colors that are. . . light on light. . . or dark on dark. . . To me, there should be no excuse for that! Or maybe it's a colored blind problem. . .???

I've heard that Red shows up more as a Brown. . . Correct?
If so, must be hard to see a Red traffic signal. . . is it?

Hey, can you easily read the light colored gradations on the Home Page charts of the Dow, NASD, & S&P??
If you can, I'd say it's because you're colored blind. . . but for the rest of us, it's very hard to read.

Good to hear from you! Hope all is going well & good for you!

Thank you,
Joe

In beta the Inbox can be accessed from 2 spots. The one next to the SI logo in the top right shows how many messages are in your Inbox. The other location, the row below the yellow header, doesn't. Why not? There's certainly plenty of room.

Thanks, SIfkaJB

SIfkaJB -

If you crunch your browser into 800 x 600 there isn't much room there. We'll think about this, though.

John
