Glib restatement of the obvious, of the topics which have been discussed to death, in the form of a media article, is entirely useless and indicates a need to look significant. This is a major problem for all media in this era. They wish to look good at the expense of good ideas.

You make superficial comments whose generality loses the insight stolen from others. Instead of rehashing why not come up with ideas? You claim it's time to back up the truck. Why? You give no evidence for your prejudice. The reason why is that you don't have any more answers than the incompetent ATHM management.

You're doing the same as them, hoping someone will bail out all their pretense to knowledge, a knowledge presumed because of association. When you are associated with gods you deserve to be paid like a god. It's all about worthiness.

When one is paid to perform one must perform whether one knows any tricks or not. You represent precisely why ATHM is a failure. You're part of the same hand out entitlement crowd that populates ATHM and that has been designated as worthy, yet you, as they, have nothing to contribute except cheer leading.

Does your post actually mean:

Approximately 95% of all buyers of cable modems sold
through Cablevision's telemarketing efforts are electing to self install.

What you are neglecting as is the technician to whom you spoke is the fact that CATV coax more often than not has had improper connection. The tech goes in and finds the decibel level adequate, so they install and leave. Six months later quite unbeknownst to that tech, another tech has to make a roll because the customer is having blinking light modem problems. The problem is variable ingress and it comes because the first tech was not thorough in eliminating the old junk. It is critical, and I'm talking from my own experience of installing, that at every accessible point in the drop new equipment must be installed regardless of appearances of core and sheath or readings from scanners.

The techs with whom you have spoken don't realize what a disservice they're doing to COX and @Home. They haven't been properly trained and they are probably being paid per job, but mostly they think they know what they're doing. Just ask them how many of their installations did they go back and examine in order to have conviction about the integrity of their handiwork.

And you believe what they tell you. Is this another glib and superficial result from a superficial author from the superficial science era? How did you clowns get through the university? Hasn't anyone told you that you must investigate in order to substantiate any claim? Got it. The truth doesn't sell media like emotionalism.

I think you are right, it did remove some uncertainty. Just not all that much <g>.

I'm trying understand what that statement refers to. Does Cablevision mean the percent of all subscribers across the entire quarter? Or do they mean 95% of callers who responded to advertising for purchases of cable modems. It seems to me that if you are advertising cable modems for sale, you are more likely to get callers who want to install it themselves. If Home Depot advertises a sale on toilet seats, I would expect most buyers to be self-installers.

I doubt that 95% of all subscribers prefer self-install.

Glad to see some desire to investigate on this thread.

It surely means the latter. They did use the term "buyers". You don't refer to new subs as "buyers".

This is no trivial matter, because Bell has hung so much on the self install tactic which I claim is worse than specious and a downright major negative. You can't do anything worse than follow the sirens of expediency.

I'm gradually accumulating an impression that only Att Cable Services is putting in the good installs. The other MSOs seem to be engaged in wishful thinking and burying hidden costs for the questionable land grab strategy, the same grab strategy that impelled Jermo to chase Excite.

Eric,

What if ATHM adds subs at half the rate and they are twice as valuable as AOL subs and the churn rate is 1/10th AOLs and the subscriber fees are sustainable and the free ISP craze doesn't apply to you?

What then?

You are wrong.

No I'm not. I live in an area with an old cable plant. Maybe you don't.

I agree with you but it appears that they are making the choice to defer tech expenses in favor of a rapid increase in new subscribers.

It is a disservice, but then so is the do it yourself free install because of the same tech problems. Still they may be able to gain subscribers at a much greater rate.

Interesting...

Your self-proclaimed (godliness) and lack of emotional control speaks volumes. I'm sorry you feel that way about yourself. It's not very becoming of a God!
