I have heard that before - logistical infrastructure. That's exactly what Barrons is attacking.

What's the defense?

Having 10 million accounts and tying-up most of the most valuable portal real estate on the Web makes Amazon unique. Having a cover story on Barron's makes Amazon unique. Being the leading etailer makes Amazon unique. No one come close.

Have you download Winamp? Amazon. RealJukebox? Amazon.

Who needs a defense? I think Barron's does. Those points are tired and hollow. Either you buy Amazon's swing-for-the-fences strategy or you don't. It's as simple as that. There is nothing wrong with Amazon's aggressiveness, hiring choices or execution.

Its a long discussion, but in simple terms logistics accounts for maybe 30% of the cost of any item you buy in a store, so if somebody uses technology to diminish that expense, they then can reduce prices and still remain profitable, while others go out of business (especially if it is a commodity item). The problem is it costs so much to get the automation up and running and there are a fair amount of risks. Also in Amazon's case they are spending excessively for advertising. All things being equal though, automated centralized factories will eventually put the old line out of business. But all things aren't equal as everyone here is aware.

What is real Jukebox and is that aligned in any way with Real Networks? I almost forgot Amazon seems well ahead on downloadable media doesn't it. Well you sure don't need manufacturing software for that.

After all, it's about faith, isn't it?

I buy ONE book because AMZN is selling it at a discount and taking a loss on the sale. I become one of those 10 million buyers. Am I loyal to AMZN? As long as AMZN is taking a loss on their sales, may be.

Retailing and brokering isn't particularly a profitable high margin business. They make make a buck or two on volume, but that doesn't justify the current levels of AMZN stock.

And if they did say that they would know that commodity businesses are where you want to be in online automation. Unfortunately most bears here don't know that and neither apparently does Barrons so I would suggest they make an appointment with these lemonade tycoon friends of yours and find out something about the e-tailing business model.
