excerpt

Analysts say much of Amazon's growth comes from Amazon Prime, a $79-a-year program that gives subscribers unlimited two-day shipping. More warehouses would let Amazon reduce the cost of operating the program.

Texas and Amazon argued over sales taxes last year when Ms. Combs told the company it owed the state $269 million in unpaid taxes because of the retailer's Dallas-area warehouse. Amazon closed the facility last year because of what it described as the state's "unfavorable regulatory environment."

Ms. Combs said Amazon contacted her office about two weeks ago to seek a deal, and Mr. Misener met with her for 45 minutes in Austin. Amazon proposed building new facilities and creating 2,500 jobs in Texas over the next four years, she said, and the two sides agreed that Amazon would start collecting taxes in July.

Amazon said the agreement announced Friday "resolves the issue of the disputed $269 [million] assessment."

Ms. Combs declined to comment on whether Amazon will pay the unpaid taxes, citing state laws that prohibit her from commenting on individual tax cases. In previous cases involving unpaid taxes on online sales, state governments have forgiven the unpaid taxes in exchange for tax collection going forward.

Amazon.com Inc. filed its Form 10-Q.

including on p. 11

In September 2010, the State of Texas issued an assessment of $269 million for uncollected sales taxes for the period from December 2005 to December 2009, including interest and penalties through the date of the assessment. The State of Texas alleged that we should have collected sales taxes on applicable sales transactions during those years. While we continue to believe the assessment was without merit, in April 2012, we entered into a settlement with the State of Texas that included an agreement to collect sales taxes on applicable sales transactions for our US-focused internet retailers beginning July 1, 2012, resolution of Texas sales taxes up to that date, certain commitments related to capital investment and job creation in the state, and an immaterial payment to the state.

Good timing all around. Here I am thinking about buying a Kindle for a gift to a graduating high school student for college textbooks, I wouldn't want to subsidize such a proven failure ;-)

Better than that, I bought an AMZN 195 May call 5 minutes before market close/earnings announcement Thursday, but I had to sell it Friday morning. Now that would have been a heckuva gift 8-D

I really need to start following this company, I just ordered something from them this past week.

Me too. I spend more money at Amazon than I do at Apple. Nobody gets more money from me than Amazon. Ridiculous not to follow and trade it, at my end.
