Ken, it is the leader in optical netwotrking and is being run up like JDSU, SDLI and Ciena (the best of all investments over any time period recently in the sector.) as well as other leaders like BRCM, JNPR, CREE, AVNX and RBAK. When value matters again, they will all fall the hardest (since the internets are not going to run up nearly as high, though I see a few getting a bit frothy again).

There will be another slaughtering imo. I am long a few right now, short SONS and RBAK, going short the others at earnings. I plan to use AMCC as a test rat this week. Earnings are on the 12th.

Today was a great day for my SONS....

To all: Re: "When value matters....."

A billion[almost] here ...a billion[almost] there....... soon you're talking real money ....and growth.

From Reuter's today"

....

Such an announcement didn't do much to hold up the stock today...or maybe I should lôôk at it another way...without that announcement we might have been down even more.

This kind of slippage just two weeks from earnings announcement doesn't sit too well with me. I was hoping for a little shot in the arm in the next two weeks before the "sell on the news" action takes place.....ANON

OT - TechPlayer, I just want your comments on this article from lightreading which suggests that the claims of Corvis about ultra long haul transmission without regeneration are suspect.

These are all using optical amps - correct? It's subtle... I wonder what the distance is between optical amps. That would be a good comparison as well. Each deployment is unique and trying to compare is difficult since apples are almost never compared to apples. right?

I understand that Qtera's technology is based on solitons.

Kenneth, what it says is that there have been no deals as of yet. What did you think of dan smith's line of bull printed by that rag last week? Any good reporter would have caught him in his lies and called him on them...

In regards to the actual capability of the Corvis product, we all need to wait and see if it is deployed.

The Qtera engineers told me at OFC that they were not using solitons, rather that they were using raman amplification to achieve their distance between regeneration.

FYI Solitons are an alternative way to extend the distance between regeneration. The reason that signals need regeneration is as an optical pulse travels over a physical fiber the pulse changes shape, typically the leading edge travels slightly faster than the trailing edge due to refraction in the fiber. After 1000Km or so, the pulse becomes considerably more difficult to read and may bleed over into the previous pulse. Soliton technology resolves this by transmitting a pulse that is already distorted, but in a way that the natural refraction of the fiber brings the pulse into sharper focus rather than distorting further. As you can imagine, this is very difficult technology to implement. Research in soliton technology has gone on for more than a decade and there are still no commercial products.
