About CIA. Remember we were talking about third world governments purchasing MSS phones, and not USA government. CIA does not tap US citizens in the US. That's FBI's role (with a court authorization, yes). CIA spies abroad. But this was only a recreational subject, I was not really serious on it. (There are other ways of circumventing the tapping problem)
You mentioned 1 percent. Of what? Iridium says one pct of CELLULAR phones for their iridium/iridium services. Then you must add their other 3% for their roaming services for cellular phones. These are worldwide numbers.
Rural market is probably 10% of Iridium's market and 50-60% of Globalstar's .Latin America has a huge rural telephony problem. The distances are too big. You probably have the wrong idea about L.America rural areas. Sharing of a phone is more for small villages than for farms and countryside leisure properties. But, yes, sharing would happen the same way you would use a friend's phone when visiting him. Public phone booths would be used in villages. Or small "switching boxes" such as Iridium's MXU (Mobile Exchange Unit) through fixed phones in up to 100 homes would be connected to the satellite system.

Nevertheless, it is two more = totalling 41, which brings Iridim closer and closer...

Yes, but perhaps you have noticed Iridium had another launch forecasted for the 15 of December (now with launch date TBD). Look at

www-pao.ksc.nasa.gov/kscpao/schedule/mixfleet. Isn't it interesting that the date is now TBD (I just saw another message saying it is scheduled for the 20th). Could it have been a backup in case the Long March launch failed? Probably yes.

Notice Globalstar's first launch is scheduled for Feb. Globalstar has postponed their first launch for several times already.

Down, yes, but would I (we) dare to sell?? Seems more a better time to buy. Maybe I am too optimistic...but it is quite a project!
I have some questions I have been trying to answer.
1)It seems Globalstar (www.globalstar.com) and ICO (www.ico.com) will not have global paging services. Can anybody confirm this?
2)Does anyone have any hint on how Iridium (www.iridium.com - lousy pages, load very slowly from here)intends to market its paging services, as it seems to be an awfully segmented market.
3) A birdman told me ICO is preparing to go to the market. Can somebody confirm this?

Globalstar does have paging abilities built in. The handsets support short message paging and voice mail, as well as having a built in data-port and modem. Thus, to answer your question, Globalstar will offer global paging. I do not know about ICO, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for their system to be operational. Also, don't count Globalstar out because of a launch delay. The chairman recently bought $2 million worth of stock, half before the launch delay announcement, and half after. Remember that after two launches of 4 satellites each, Globalstar will have 3 launches with 12 satellites each. That will quickly produce an operational constellation. Demand for Globalstar mobile services appears to be so strong that the original plan to use 50% of the service for fixed sites has been changed and Loral's GEO satellites will now be used for fixed site rural telephony.

So Globalstar finally realized there is a more profitable market with the travelers than with rural telephony, as I* had always affirmed and G* denied???!!!

I have contacted the company and have requested confirmation of the scheduled launch on the 20th of December. I will update the thread when I get a response.

Globalstar has never denied that mobile users are a higher margin market than fixed. I think the correct way to look at it is that the Globalstar system is flexible enough to do either, and in those areas that will use all their capacity for mobile users, Globalstar is savvy enough that they will be able to service the huge demand for fixed services as well by using Loral GEO satellites. Local governments are very interested in fixed systems--now Loral/Globalstar can supply both. Their is no better managed company---period. Nobody can know for sure what the demand will be in either fixed or mobile scenarios. Estimates, and remember they are only estimates, are constantly changing, and will continue to do so. If you are concerned about profitability, then the Globalstar business plan would certainly be more appealing to you than that of Iridium. Both will prosper, but Globalstar has lower costs--that is the bottom line. The merits/faults of both systems can be argued ad infinatum, but it is not worth the computer memory. There is a place for both companies, a profitable place. I am also an Iridium shareholder, but only as a small investment. Good luck to all!

All,

Anyone catch the lauchspace newsline on the last launch? I
noticed a mention of a loss now of 3 iridium birds from the 41.
Seems a bit high of a failure rate (1 failure per 14). I know
that I* doenst pay for the losses (moto does), but 3 already
toasted is of some concern to me.

TWO IRIDIUM SATELLITES LAUNCHED FROM CHINA
posted by Keith Stein

Two Iridium satellites were placed in orbit this
morning aboard a Long March 2C/SD rocket.

The two satellites will be part of the 66-satellite
Iridium system.

This was the first Long March 2C/SD launcher to be used
in placing operational Iridium satellites in orbit.

Two dummy Iridiums were launched in September to test
the launchers performance before this first operational
flight.

The lift-off took place at Taiyuan Satellite Launch
Center in China.

It is the eighth Iridium system launch in eight months
and will bring the total number of satellites on-orbit
to 41, according to a Iridium press release.

Three of the satellites launched earlier this year are
having problems which may prevent them from ever
becoming fully operational.

Iridium LLC is developing and commercializing this
global wireless communications network that will
combine the worldwide reach of 66 low-earth- orbit
satellites with land-based wireless systems to enable
subscribers to communicate using handheld telephones
and pagers virtually anywhere in the world with service
introduction planned for 1998.

The Iridium satellites are designed and built by
Motorola's Satellite Communications Group based in
Chandler, Arizona, USA.
