Funny you should bring that up. We, the parents of kids playing baseball, make our own. They are quite easy to make (YouTube has many videos on this if you care). We would often play double headers which would last six hours. Being dedicated parents, we'd have a nice cooler of "soda" ready to help us last through the games. Aside from the days when we'd be laughing uncontrollably, heckling the umpires or other fans, rolling down the hill, etc., I don't think anyone ever caught on. :)

The Red Sox fans are going to love Bobby, and the press will never go hungry for stories. He's also an intensely loyal guy that the players will love. The only "downside" (which I put in quotes because I think it's a positive trait) is that he calls it as he sees it at that moment. The current generation of coddled athletes might not like this, but he's just as likely to praise you as diss you, so you never have to wonder what he really thinks or might be saying about you behind your back. It's the way he and his friends were raised.

Hey Jeff,

Can you believe A.J. Burnett is jinxed? Here's a guy that hasn't really batted since 2005 with the Marlins and gets hit by his own foul tip during bunting practice in spring training. OK, why don't these teams protect their pitchers by having them wear a mask during spring training drills. Sure, this doesn't mean that this mishap won't happen in a real game, but as an owner, I'd sure like to protect my high paid pitchers as much as possible from injury at all possible times. Plus, just think of the fashion statement these guys would be setting!

That seems like a freak accident. Put a mask on a guy and he'll next foul it off his ankle. Put a guard on his ankle and... eventually you have someone in full body armor. The Marlins are going to need way more than AJ to contend with the Phils, Nats, and that team from NY. OK, maybe two of three ain't bad. :)

This year I'm rooting for Bobby V and the Yankees. And the Mets and the Nats. Not sure in what order yet though. Pretty shameless, I know. A sportswriter friend of mine, and former college roommate, is launching a local sports blog where, because of a very long association with Bobby in Stamford is going to have lots of Sox material. Plus there's my friend in the front office (who got me 18 tickets to a sold-out game two years ago). But of course I just wanted to assure you that you played no role in my decision. ;^)
