United Microelectronics posted record high revenue in August
Taipei, Sept. 7, 2000 (CENS)--United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), the second largest domestic provider of wafer foundry services listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange, reaped revenue of NT$9.831 billion last month, the highest monthly figure ever on record.

UMC's revenue last month jumped tremendously, by 290.30% from the same month last year. For the January-August period, the company registered cumulative revenue of NT$62.911 billion, a whopping hike of 240.44% from the same eight months in 1999.

UMC posted revenue of NT$43.75 billion for the first half of this year, fulfilling 49.72% of the NT$88 billion projected for this year. Meanwhile, the half-year pretax profit of NT$19.51 billion attained 64.97% of the goal of NT$30.03 billion for this year.

The company's gross profit rate for wafer foundry services recorded 44%-46% in the first quarter and 48% in the second quarter of this year. Based on the January-August business operational performance and an expected gross profit rate of over 50% in the second half of this year, UMC is likely to reach NT$110 billion in revenue and NT$45 billion in pretax profit this year. Institutional stock investors estimate UMC's net earnings per share this year to be NT$3-NT$4, much higher than the target of NT$2.67. However, the company has so far indicated no intention of raising its 2000 financial forecast.

UMC's 8-inch wafer foundry capacity stands at 2.6 million wafers, 4% of the global total. The company will increase its foundry capacity to 3.1 million wafers for a global share of 5% next year.

Glad to hear the news release, but $300.00?... Hopefully, this will come down in price. It's hard for me to see many people paying such a price.

Looks like it's still too bulky for jogging. When are higher capacity flash memory chips coming?

<<New Nomad Jukebox Stores
Lifetime's Collection of Tunes
By WALTER S. MOSSBERG

THE DIGITAL-MUSIC revolution rolls on, whether the titans of the record industry like it or not. The latest advance in this revolution is a remarkable new music player called the Nomad Jukebox, from Creative Technology. The Jukebox is small and light, about the size and shape of a standard portable CD player. But its appearance is deceptive, for the Nomad Jukebox can hold more than 1,500 typical songs in the popular MP3 format -- a lifetime's collection of favorite tunes -- and can play them back, in any combination or order, with excellent fidelity. That's the equivalent of at least 150 CDs, or over 100 hours of music.

It isn't cheap, and it isn't perfect. But, in my tests, it worked fine, and the effect of using it is dramatic if you love music, or merely like to pass the time with songs on a long flight. With the Nomad Jukebox, you no longer have to carry a pile of CDs, or decide which of your favorite songs to take along. If you have $499, and a Windows PC or a Mac with a USB port, you can load up your Jukebox and carry all your favorite music in one hand.

This isn't the first MP3 player, of course. Many companies have introduced small, portable players that can be loaded with MP3 song files via a cable connected to a PC. But these players, which now typically cost between $100 and $200, usually hold only about an hour of music. They store the songs on special memory cards which have limited capacity and are very costly.

THE JUKEBOX USES a compact but copious six-gigabyte hard disk. Hard disks can be fragile, but this one is rugged. In my tests, I shook the device repeatedly, and even dropped it four or five times onto a wooden desk and onto the floor. It never skipped and never stopped working.

There have been a couple of earlier hard-disk-based players, but they were hard to find, tended to cost more than the Nomad, and didn't carry a familiar and trusted brand name like Creative, which has long been a leader in computer audio.

Nomad Jukebox
Here's how the Nomad Jukebox works. First, you have to obtain the songs and convert them to MP3s on your PC or Mac. This is easy to do. Using the software included with the jukebox, or any other common MP3 program, you can put your favorite commercial CDs into the computer's CD drive, and "rip," or convert, the songs you like to MP3 format. If you have an Internet connection, you can also gather songs in the MP3 format from a host of Internet sites, such as MP3.com.

Then, you connect the jukebox to the PC with the included USB cable, and the songs are transferred to the hard disk inside the jukebox. The transfers are rapid, and the songs are immediately available for playback.

In my tests, I transferred 1,363 rock, pop and folk songs to the jukebox and still had over 850 megabytes of storage left on the device. The songs I selected included famous tunes from famous artists, as well as songs from a self-published CD by my favorite unsigned band (my son's), the Arthur Dent Foundation (www.trydent.com). I also successfully transferred songs from my favorite Web-based singer, Susan Greenbaum, available free at www.susangreenbaum.com. All of these songs, from all the diverse sources, played perfectly on the Jukebox.

The Jukebox can also record music directly from your stereo system, without a PC, though the resulting digital files are much larger than MP3s. And, while it's mainly designed to be used with headphones, the jukebox can also be connected to home audio receivers and speakers.

WITH THIS MANY SONGS, organization is crucial. So the jukebox includes an LCD screen with a menu that allows you to see your collection organized by artists, albums, or genres. You just drill down in the menus and select songs, or whole albums, and they are added to the queue of songs that are playing. You can also create permanent play lists of any mixture of songs, in any quantity or order. You can build these play lists right on the Jukebox, but an easier way to do it is to create the play lists using the Nomad software on your PC, and then transfer them to the Jukebox.

There are some downsides. Hard drives take power, so the four rechargeable AA batteries can run the unit for only four hours. But Creative includes two sets of these batteries, which should cover any long flight.

If you have a question you want answered, or any other comment or suggestion about Walter S. Mossberg's column, please send e-mail to mossberg@wsj.com

Also, because of voluntary restrictions imposed by the music industry, you can't use the jukebox to transfer songs from one of your PCs to another, even though this is perfectly legal. And, the software crashed on me a few times during my initial transfer of the 1,300 songs. It choked when I selected too many songs at once to transfer, forcing me to quit and restart the software, and to restart the jukebox before resuming the transfer process.

But, all in all, the Nomad Jukebox works. It's available at electronics stores and Web retailers such as Amazon.com. And more high-capacity players are coming. ReQuest Inc., and Lydstrom Inc, are introducing larger and costlier MP3 jukeboxes that are designed to be attached to home stereo systems. And Philips and others are selling special CD players that can play home-recorded CDs containing up to 150 MP3 tracks each.

So the revolution advances. And consumers are the winners.>>

From home page here on SI.....S3

Greg Heard of the Greenspring Fund (800-366-3863), provides the following stock idea on S3 (SIII 10 1/2). Below is the write-up.

S3 is the leading manufacturer of the portable MP3 player, a digital music player similar to a Walkman. Music can be downloaded from the Internet onto these MP3 music players, which are selling like hotcakes and are especially popular among teenagers.

Chip Carlson of the Greenspring Fund mentions that S3 has entered into an agreement with Nike to manufacture MP3 devices. Within the next few weeks, Nike will begin marketing and selling their version of the MP3 player manufactured by S3. "Nike is planning a huge marketing blitz of its version of the MP3 player during the Olympics," says Carlson. "Nike's marketing efforts will definitely boost MP3 sales and S3 will directly benefit from this."

Carlson adds that S3 sold its semiconductor manufacturing business to a Taiwan company called United Microelectronics (UMC), receiving stock in UMC for the deal. Using UMC's current market value, Carlson figures S3's stake in UMC is worth almost $800 million, or about $9 per share.

"Those moves will allow S3 to be profitable by the fourth quarter of this year"

Morgan Stanley just began an underwriting effort to list the UMC American Depository Receipts (ADRs) in the United States. Carlson notes that the ADRs of Taiwanese companies typically sell at a premium of 30 to 50 percent with respect to the stocks' value on the Taiwan Stock Exchange. The ADRs of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, the largest publicly traded company in Taiwan, trades at almost a 50-percent premium in relation to its value on the Taiwan Stock Exchange. UMC is the second largest publicly traded company in Taiwan. Carlson thinks the UMC ADRs could command a similar premium, with S3's stake possibly being worth in excess of $1 billion.

S3 is in the middle of selling its nonprofitable graphics chip business in an announced deal that will fetch more than $200 million. The company is also shutting down its money-losing graphics board business. "Those moves will allow S3 to be profitable by the fourth quarter of this year," comments Carlson.

Carlson figures S3 could earn 40 cents in 2001 and 80 to 85 cents in 2002. Given S3's MP3 business and its stake in UMC, this pro thinks shares of S3 are worth at least $20.

Hello all,

Haven't posted for quite a while but after reading the message from TexasDude I just have to add my two cents.

First, all of us "old" timers have heard all the language in regards to the value of UMC. This has been going on since late 1997. Go back and check all the posts in regards to the "worth" of this investment. Comments such as "the third quarter will see huge gains", or "wait until the end of the first quarter" echo in my head.

We have heard about the great "Diamond" acquisition and how the RIOPORT IPO will bring us all (pun intended) "diamonds" for Christmas.

We have heard all about "book value" and how great a value it would be to purchase shares at or below this "book value" number, what ever it is at a given time.

We have read how Hank Greenberg just loves to lay into this stock (man was he ever right) and now we are hearing how great a potential it is from the likes of Chip Carlson.

Dan Scovel has given his blessing to S3 over and over again. Where the hell is he now?

We have heard how Pots will be our savior and what a great move it was to get rid of Walt Amaral (he "resigned" to pursue "other" interests).

How about those up-grades.....make that down-grades from all those great investment houses?

How about the partnership with Dell, Nike, Dolby, Hollywood Records, etc.? The Via deal?.....(big deal).......

I would love to go on. I never thought I would become a basher but ENOUGH!

FWIW, I have NO confidence in S3 or Pots. Every time things begin to look good........WHAM! More excuses and more promises of better financial performance.

As far as I am concerned (and this is not an original idea) S3 would be better off selling ALL of it's components and assets and give everyone their fair share of what they get for it. Yes, that's right, sell off the company.

We would all be better off and would not have to listen to any more bullshit from the idiots that are running (ruining) this company.

I guess I will go back to the joke page……although this (S3) is pretty funny………..HA HA (sob)
