3Com To Roll Out Switches That Map CoS To QoS
By TIM WILSON
3Com next week will unveil new SuperStack II and CoreBuilder switches that can map Ethernet class of service (CoS) to ATM quality of service (QoS), making it possible for mixed ATM-Ethernet shops to maintain a common set of traffic-handling priorities from end to end.

“We're excited about the idea of putting policy-enabled networking into our environment,” said Steve Schallau, manager of network and video technology for University of Iowa Health Care, which already has signed a deal to purchase the new 3Com switching modules. The hospital will use the policy capability to set priorities among emulated LANs that handle video as well as data traffic, he said.

The new modules for 3Com's SuperStack II 1100/3300 and CoreBuilder 7000HD switches are based on new ATM chip technology that includes CoS-QoS mapping for Ethernet-ATM networks, as well as Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching.

“A lot of the largest networks are ATM in the core and Fast Ethernet at the edge,” said product manager Tim Hale.

The SuperStack II 1100/3300 ATM expansion modules will be available in July for $5,995. ATM interface modules for the CoreBuilder switch will be available in August at $9,995 for OC-3 and $11,995 for OC-12.
