A popular MP3 player on the Mac is a free/shareware called MacAMP. You don't need a CD burner for MP3 but since MP3 files can take up a lot of space if you collect a lot of songs many people record the tracks onto CDs. With 650MB per CD one can put about 150-200 songs per disc.
