Mr. Bergh,
You do realize I'm sure that many of our greatest art treasures have religious overtones. Our great works of literature are influenced by religion, I mean where would literary critics be without "Christ figures." Many of the greatest architectual monuments are religious in nature. Music has been given some of its most magnificent pieces by religiously inspired artists. Whatever the faults of religion, and there are some, the fault lies really not with religion but with ourselves.

And if you are arguing that things, like cars and satelites and electricity are a substitute for a greater belief system then you seem to be equating materialism with religion. None of the things you mention solve the real problems of man's existence. Fear of death, of the loss of identity, the meaning and importance of ones life and work, these are the questions religion speaks to. Other systems of belief address these questions also, but not, I think materialism.

Perhaps I have misunderstood your argument, if so I beg your pardon.
