|Let's talk about bitcoin |
In 2016, the bitcoin-U.S. dollar quote page didn't even break into the top 5,000 of our quote pages. In fact, it came in at No. 5,177.
Fast-forward to the end of 2017, and it has cracked into the top 20. In December, it's No. 2. Visits have skyrocketed over 21,000% from 2016 -- most of these coming at the tail-end of the year. About 70% of visits to BTCUSD came in the last two months of the year.
Bitcoin has been hitting milestones left and right. Last Friday, it plummeted below many of the milestone markers it had just hit (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/how-much-has-been-lost-in-fridays-cryptocurrency-rout-nearly-150-billion-2017-12-22) and today it's regaining some ground (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/bitcoin-on-the-rebound-futures-prices-also-above-15000-2017-12-26).
Within MarketWatch's walls, one of the most notable days for the cryptocurrency was Dec. 7, the first U.S. trading day that our BTCUSD quote page surpassed the DJIA quote page in traffic (though it had previously surpassed DJIA on Nov. 26 and Dec. 3). It remained the No. 1 ticker on our site from Dec. 7 through Dec. 10.
Bitcoin Investment Trust (GBTC) , an actively managed ETF that offers indirect exposure to bitcoin, has seen a wave of interest recently, as well. In December, it is the No. 8 most visited ticker on our site, though the recent traffic surge hasn't been quite enough to get it into the top 50 for 2017 (it currently stands at No. 52).
