Lanman says that through a partnership with chip firm Sequans, and because Verizon is such a large buyer of the modems, Verizon can offer customers the chips for about $15—or half the cost of the chips if the developer were buying them outside Verizon’s program. While many connected products rely on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and then use the customer’s mobile phone for any mobile connectivity, there are entire classes of devices such as dog trackers, luggage trackers, and automotive applications that would benefit form an always-on cellular connection. But the added cost of a cellular modem, plus the cost of a cellular subscription can make the final price of the device untenable for the consumer, or even corporate market. Which is why the lower-priced chip, and Verizon’s plan to offer flexibility on new data plans for “things” will help as well.
Choosing connectivity is another barrier, Lanman said. Obviously, Verizon would like this new market to take off on its wireless network but he admitted there are significant cost challenges to do that -- modules that enable devices to run on LTE have been more expensive than those that use WiFi or Zigbee-based connectors, for example. Lanman then showed off a new Sequans Communications' chipset which he said will halve the cost of developing IoT devices for LTE. "This changes the game and is not the end of the work we are doing around device cost reduction. In 2016 we will halve the price again," he said. In 2016, Verizon will launch what he called an IoT Core that will be much more efficient in connecting low payload devices and will be at a much lower cost, Lanman said. "We will connect in 92 countries around the world through ThingSpace, he said. "And that number will skyrocket by 2016 to blanket the globe by end of the year."..
At Verizon, Lanman said the company is working to lower the cost of connecting billions of existing devices that companies have used for years to Verizon's network. Holding up a new computer chip made by Sequans Communications, an LTE chip maker, he said the chip will provide a "significant reduction in cost...that changes the game." It will provide 4G LTE connectivity in modules connected to IoT devices to "make the wide-area network more accessible to developers." "The cost for an IoT module and the cost to connect will both drop dramatically," Lanman added. "Whether you are connecting your dog or water meters and any other low-payload devices, we'll handle it through a new IoT core." He said that many developers want to avoid the high cost of using LTE connections for IoT, and instead will rely on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or ZigBee. NCC cancels approval of Global Mobile changes in infrastructure construction DIGITIMES 5 October 2015 Taiwan's National Communications Commission (NCC) on October 4 announced the cancellation of its approval of changes in infrastructure construction requested by WiMAX operator Global Mobile. The cancellation was mainly because Global Mobile failed to fulfill its promise of completing 2,159 base stations in total by September 30, NCC said. Global Mobile filed the request to change its infrastructure on June 15, and give the green light on July 8, NCC indicated. During the period from July 8 to September, however, Global Mobile did not set up any additional base stations, NCC noted. Global Mobile is the only surviving WiMAX operator in Taiwan while the other five have ceased operations. As Global Mobile's WiMAX license will expire on December 15, 2015, the company is expected to apply for an extension but whether NCC will approve the application is a concern, according to market watchers.

The trend toward cellular-connected tablets started in earnest last year, and it was evident in the carriers' first-quarter results. Indeed, in the first quarter of 2015, AT&T added 711,000 postpaid tablets, way up from the 313,000 it added in the first quarter of 2014. Overall, AT&T added 441,000 postpaid subscribers in the first quarter of 2015.
For its part, Verizon added 820,000 LTE tablets in the first quarter of 2015, compared to 634,000 postpaid tablets it added in the first quarter of 2014. Verizon added 565,000 retail postpaid net additions in the first quarter of 2015.
Sprint added 349,000 postpaid tablet customers in the first quarter, compared to 516,000 tablet net adds in the year-ago period. As US tablet sales decline, carriers report an increase in cellular-connected tablet sales 14 May 2015... However, although the US tablet market appears to be shrinking, analysts say that sales of cellular-connected tablets have grown from 2.2 million in Q1 2014 to 3.2 million in the same period of 2015, a 45% increase year-over-year. Digging deeper in the first-quarter financial reports from the major US carriers, Fierce Wireless found that AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, all managed to add an increasing number of postpaid tablets during the first quarter. Verizon, the largest carrier in the US by subscriber count, sold 820,000 LTE-enabled tablets in the first three months of 2015, an increase of 29% YoY. AT&T added 711,000 of them, an increase of 127% compared to the same period of last year. Sprint added 516,000 postpaid tablets during the time period, an increase of 47% YoY. NBN and Ericsson successfully trial 3.5GHz LTE TDD 10 March 2015 NBN Co and Ericsson have successfully trialled LTE TDD technology in the 3.5GHz band in Australia. The tests used wireless termination network devices (WNTD) provided by NetComm Wireless, based on chipset solutions from Sequans Communications.
The tests showed that peak cell throughputs, both downlink and uplink, met or exceeded expected performance. 3.5 GHz provides up to 200 MHz of spectrum. This trial further validates the use of 3.5 GHz for macro and small cell deployment. NBN says the 3.5GHz radio units will be used to expand its coverage and capacity using its existing LTE assets. Taiwan market: Vee TIME to stop WiMAX operations DIGITIMES 13 May 2015 Taiwan-based WiMAX operator Vee TIME has decided to stop operations due to large cumulative operating losses, according to the company. The decision comes depite the National Communications Commission's earlier approval of Vee TIME's application for technological upgrade from WiMAX 1.0 to WiMAX 2.1, with the upgrading originally expected to be completed by the end of third-quarter 2015. Vee TIME, wiith more than 10,000 WiMAX subscribers, will dispose of WiMAX assets to cover part of the losses, the company said. Vee TIME has previously acquired two other WiMAX operators, Tatung InfoComm and Vmax Telecom, but the compant noted that the former has stopped operations and the latter's license will expire in January 2016. Vee TIME, Tatung InfoComm and Vmax have suffered a total cumulative loss of over NT$10 billion (US$327 million).

Wed, Mar 18, 2015 NCC to consult lawyers on WiMAX issue The (NCC) yesterday said it would consult legal experts on whether the government should compensate WiMAX service operators for asking them to relocate their spectrums on the 2,500MHz and 2,600MHz to other frequency bands. Relevant issues are to be settled before the auction begins in the third quarter, it added. There are still three WiMAX operators using the two frequency bands: Global Mobile, VMAX and Veetime. Veetime manager Luo Ching-tsung said the company has to upgrade its system to continue providing service if it is to relocate its frequency band, which would result in financial losses and inconvenience to its customers. VMAX representative Lin Feng-li said the commission’s proposal to relocate WiMAX operators’ frequency bands was not borne out of the “necessity to develop the television and information industries,” but so that the commission could generate more money from the auction. He said that his company would not only have to replace its infrastructure for the service, but also need to pay a higher franchise fee after the commission amends relevant regulations. The government should appropriate a certain percentage of the funds from the auction of the frequencies to compensate WiMAX operators because they are forced to move to comply with the government’s policy, he said...

The National Communications Commission (NCC) yesterday said that the government would release the 2,500MHz and 2,600MHz frequency bands for 4G telecom service use, adding that the auction of these two bands is scheduled to take place at the end of the third quarter this year... As some of the frequency blocks are currently being used by WiMAX service operators, Shyr said that the WiMAX carriers could continue to use these frequencies if their licenses are renewed, allowing them to use the spectrum for another six years. The 4G operators acquiring frequencies in the spectrum currently used by WiMAX operators could gain access if the two parties negotiate a deal, he said. Shyr said that First International Telecom and Far EasTone Telecommunications have both terminated WiMAX offerings and returned portions of the spectrum they used to the government, adding that Tatung Infocomm’s WiMAX license renewal had already been turned down by the NCC. The commission plans to review the license renewal applications from three other WiMAX operators this year — Global Mobile, VMAX and VeeTime....

According to MVG, S@iLink will have a range of approximately 20 nautical miles, or 37km. When outside areas of 4G coverage, the system will connect using the lower speed UMTS and GSM networks.

Its peer, Tatung InfoComm Co failed to have its license renewed because of insufficient network buildout. Global Mobile is now under time pressure to have its WiMAX license renewed by June — six months before its existing license expires at the end of this year. To qualify for a six-year extension, the company, headed by former Hewlett-Packard Taiwan chairwoman Rosemary Ho has to build at least 809 base stations and start offering WiMAX 2.1 phones and services... the company would lay off 20 salespeople in line with plans to shut down five retail stores on New Year’s Eve. Taiwan market: Global Mobile allowed to upgrade to WiMAX 2.1 DIGITIMES 18 December 2014 Taiwan's National Communication Commission (NCC) has approved WiMAX operator Global Mobile's application to upgrade wireless communication technology from WiMAX 1.0 to WiMAX 2.1. Based on WiMAX Forum's definition, WiMAX 2.1 includes part of IEEE 802.16e technology and part of 3GPP TD-LTE technology, NCC said. Therefore, WiMAX 2.1 subscribers can use TD-LTE-supporting terminal devices. Global Mobile, in its business plan submitted to NCC for application for an operating license, planned to set up a total of 1,809 base stations, the company said. Global Mobile has set up 1,000 WiMAX 1.0 base stations and will add 809 WiMAX 2.1 base sations, the company indicated. Orange and Ericsson have completed a live LTE-Advanced FDD trial, a carrier aggregation testing on 3.4-3.6 GHz (3.5 GHz) frequencies for testing data speeds and coverage. The live LTE-Advanced FDD testing which was authorized by the French regulator ARCEP, was carried out in October-November 2014 on Orange's network in Bordeaux using Ericsson's pre-commercial equipment.
According to a statement by Ericsson, the first phase of the trial was performed at the Orange Labs in Paris, where speeds of 300 Mbps were achieved by using the 3.5 GHz band in aggregation with the 2.6 GHz band. The second phase was carried out on Orange's live mobile network and was based on Ericsson's pre-commercial FDD 3.5 GHz radio base station equipment.
Ericsson said that the testing also confirms that the existing network grid can be reused for a 3.5 GHz macro grid; in Bordeaux, the trials used the same grid as the 1800 MHz and 2.6 GHz bands. For the trial, new antennas supporting the 3.5 GHz band were installed at the Le Ponant and Meriadeck sites in the city center of Bordeaux...

Dish Network eyes Sequans LTE chips for OTT play September 12, 2014
LAS VEGAS and DENVER –Sequans Communications is talking to Dish Network about supplying it with technology that could help Dish launch an over-the-top video service for broadband wireless devices, a senior executive at the Paris-based LTE chip vendor told The Donohue Report. Dish is “more of a technology partner today, and interested in the possibilities that LTE technology" brings. "Not just [LTE] broadcast -- but LTE in general," Sequans VP of Worldwide Marketing Craig Miller said during an interview at the CTIA convention in Las Vegas earlier this week. “We stay in touch," added Miller, whose company was the first to build chips that can support smartphones and tablets for Verizon's LTE multicast product. Based on public statements from Dish executives and demonstrations it ran at the CEDIA home automation convention in Denver this week, Dish likely will launch an over-the-top video service by the end of the year that will offer subscribers access to 4K Ultra HD programming.
Dish also demonstrated connected-home services that will allow subscribers to control thermostats and dim lights from a tablet computer. Foxconn reaching a 11.7 billion New Taiwan dollar ($390 million) deal in May for an initial 15% stake in second-tier player Asia Pacific Telecom that is set to lead to a full merger. Taiwan Star had also courted Asia Pacific Telecom, but instead is integrating mobile operator Vibo Telecom, which it acquired in a NT$4 billion deal with hardware producers Compal Electronics and Kinpo Electronics. Sprint expects to shutter at least 6,000 cell sites as it makes plans to shut down WiMAX service by the end of 2015... when Sprint bought Clearwire last summer the company had deployed WiMAX on around 17,000 cell sites and was in the process of deploying TD-LTE technology on around 5,000 of these sites--work that is now complete... Sprint plans to "cease using WiMAX technology by the end of 2015."... Last fall when Sprint unveiled Spark it noted it had around 55,000 macro cell sites.
