The British automotive market shrunk for the seventh consecutive month in October – down 12.2% overall, as demand for diesel models collapsed by nearly a third.

On the other hand (and the only hand we care about), plug-in electric vehicle registrations surged by 51% year-over-year with 3,436 deliveries, noting the second highest market share so far at 2.17%!

That is one out of every 46 vehicles sold in the UK.
“Alternatively Fuelled Vehicle (AFV) demand continued to rise, up 36.9% to 8,244 registrations, while petrol models enjoyed a more modest growth of 2.7%. However, these gains were unable to offset heavy losses in the diesel segment, as continuing consumer concerns resulted in its biggest hit yet, with demand down -29.9%.”
Breaking down the 3,436 registrations we find:
  • 672 BEVs (up 70.6 percent year-over-year)
  • 2,764 PHEVs (up 46.9 percent year-over-year)
Around 38,740 new plug-ins have now been registered over the first ten months (more than in entire 2016 – 37,000).

Since January 2013 through October 2017, nearly 125,000 plug-ins have been sold in UK – more than 81,000, or two thirds of the whole, have been plug-in hybrids.
