The good news is Qualcomm isn't sitting on it laurels. All have their nose to the grind-stone for sure.
I thought the Pixel2 was worthy of being my next phone too. What I found most interesting was Google adding upfront convolution network capability to their cameras and recurrent network capability to their head/microphones. Those two classification methods (Deep Learning neural networks) are the state of AI implementation today. Excluding IBM Watson, there is not much happening in AI beyond image and speech recognition and especially on the decision making front which is where real Artificial Intelligence break though has yet to occur.
Apple isn't far behind in the above areas but likely not moving as fast as Google. AI inference is certainly moving into all sorts of hardware and especially on the chipset front. It's no wonder Apple brought GPU design in-house at this time. Necessary work in that area is likely to delay their internalization of RF components.
