After the 1985 earthquake in Mexico City, building codes changed not only in Mexico but around the world.

Most brick buildings in earthquake zones were reinforced with steel. Although they're often destroyed in an earthquake, they remain standing allowing the occupants to leave safely.

The 1985 quake killed a minimum of 5,000 people.

The death toll in yesterday's quake has risen to 225.

Improved building codes to withstand earthquakes or hurricanes are more costly but they work and save lives.
