While many subsea cables can take days to activate capacity, the Seaborn team was able to configure the XTS-3300 and light the fiber in an impressive 30 minutes. Infinera’s unique large-scale photonic integration technology delivers terabit super-channels and, along with the Advanced Coherent Toolkit (ACT), enables rapid activation of subsea links.
The entire network is going to have to move toward SDN - The early adapters are going to have an advantage over the laggards- It will not be easy to make the transition, and I wonder at what point replacing the hardware becomes more cost effective than writing the SDN software to integrate legacy hardware- The XTS-3300 is a timely bridge piece of network hardware that will help to ease the transition though. It will not be long before the network uses AI software/hardware to configure the network in real time automatically. While that is kind of scary, I think it might be an inevitability because there is no way to control the fluid nature of the demands of the network. There are just too many variables- Short term demand spikes from special events, natural disasters, hacks, outages, breaches etc. A sort of "blockchain" AI management SDN configuration on the fly is an inevitability that will be implemented sooner than expected, and it will be interesting to see who are the biggest beneficiaries are-
