A DC-based privacy group complains to federal regulators about Google's practice of tracking consumers' in-store purchases to boost its ad business. The Electronic Privacy Information Center has filed the complaint with the FTC, seeking an investigation of the Alphabet (GOOGL) unit for alleged violations of users' privacy. Google collects data on billions of credit-card transactions to show advertisers that clicks on ads leads to purchases. The company said in a statement that all transaction data are "encrypted and aggregated--we don't share or receive any identifiable credit-card data whatsoever." Google added users can opt out of the program. (jack.nicas@wsj.com; @jacknicas) (END) Dow Jones Newswires July 31, 2017 20:48 ET (00:48 GMT)
