There is a lot of good information about recessions and ECRI at

advisorperspectives.com 

One of the charts from the article is reproduced below. It shows all the recessions going back to 1970. In each one of those recessions, GDP growth has been negative(red bars). At the moment, at the present time, whether we are in a recession or not, is not known. More time and data is needed to determine where we are presently.
