There's no need of those metals that can't be filled by sources on earth. Material science is advancing so fast that by the time a boondoggle to space could deliver, the product would be antiquated.
Why don't they put their dough since it's throwaway into something of value to humanity? They could donate money to the asteroid scanning program that looks for KT boundary inbound asteroids.
