While incompatible peripherals will discourage some iPhone upgraders, the bigger issue at hand is the proprietary nature of the port, and the encrypted streams requiring "IP fees" to vendors for what comes in or goes out of it. In the end, it all amounts to just more idiot taxes for end users who find themselves entrapped in such an ecosystem.
