Handsets are not a purely utilitarian device. For better or worse, they are seen as accessories and the choice/design of a handset makes a statement. Apple has long benefited from this as the iPhone has been a "cool" device to own. That is going to be nearly impossible to sustain if the look of the industrial design and the OS remain static.

Whether that makes sense or not is irrelevant. Personally, it pisses me of whenever I go to buy a new pair of sandals and I discover that I cant buy the exact same design.
