this battle won't be much of a challenge for Intel, their $6.5 billion R&D budget is more than ten times ARM's 2011 annual revenues.

In fairness, a large portion of that budget goes for process R&D, which ARM doesn't need to match.

By 2014 Intel’s new microprocessors will surpass ARM’s in performance and capability, and should be very competitive with ARM in power efficiency. At that point Apple will be forced into a key decision, whether to continue backing ARM or port their iOS to Intel x86 architecture.

This is so glaringly obvious that only a "Parts is Parts" type could fail to see it. Add in the vast capacity coming on line and it's overwhelming. Obviously, Apple is as well aware as anyone. I'd love to be a fly on the wall at one of their planning meetings.

How does AMD plan to overcome the inevitable? They're planning on designing ARM based products themselves.
