All I can say is that if Apple releases a 7" iPad, I hope there's something compelling about it, and that they've managed to deal with the issues Steve Jobs identified. I hope they're not just going to present a shrunken version of apps that have been designed to use a 10" screen, because I think that would suck.

To be honest, the move worries me a little bit. I don't want to see Apple creating products for the sole purpose of responding to competitive threats. I'm hoping my worries are unjustified. I realize that there is room for innovation in the 7" tablet area, and that, as someone pointed out here a few days ago, the evolution of the tablet form is not already over. So when I say I'm worried a little bit, I really mean that it's only a little bit.

Supporters of this idea may well be right, and I will be happy to have my fears proved groundless.

And I'll bet Google and Amazon are a lot more worried. They should be.
