Facebook's Share Of Display Ads Falls; Google's Rises By KEVIN SHALVEY, INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY
Posted 01:02 PM ET Email Print License Comment inShare The U.S. online display advertising market continues to grow, but Facebook's (FB) grasp on the market slipped last quarter, says a new report.
Facebook's U.S. market share for online display ads fell to 12% in Q1 from 13.9% the quarter prior, according to a report by market tracker IDC. But online display ad revenue overall jumped 14% to $2.9 billion, IDC says.
Meanwhile, Google's (GOOG) display advertising market share rose to 25% from 21.4%.
The IDC report, "Worldwide and U.S. Internet Advertising Spending Report," details U.S. ad spending, and showed a big 150% jump in mobile ad revenue in the quarter.
IDC expects a further shift from PC-based online advertising to ads placed on mobile devices, IDC's Karsten Weide said in the report.
As the mobile ad race heats up, Facebook's strategy to take on Google has been in doubt.
The IDC report says U.S. search ad spending rose 8.8% in Q1 to $4.1 billion. Google's search ad market share rose to 59.8% from 58.2%, IDC says.
Yahoo's (YHOO) display ad market share climbed to 7% from 6.2%, and Microsoft's (MSFT) fell to 7.1% from 8.7%.
Weide says Yahoo's performance marks a turnaround, since its share had declined for five consecutive quarters.
"However, it's too early to tell if the current recovery is here to stay," he wrote.
