TSMC reportedly seeing orders slow down

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC) IC design customers have been cautious about placing orders scheduled to ship in the fourth quarter of 2012 as uncertainty is discouraging them from stockpiling inventory, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

Many of the clients have cut back on wafer starts for the third quarter as they still have a lot of inventory on hand, the sources indicated. And with the demand outlook for the last quarter of 2012 remaining uncertain, the IC design customers tend to slow their pace for new orders, the sources said.

Such a scenario, however, does not apply to demand for TSMC's 28nm manufacturing capacity. Demand for 28nm chips continues to exceed supply, the sources observed.

The majority of TSMC's 28nm process capacity is used to fulfill orders placed by Qualcomm and Nvidia at present, the sources pointed out. As a result, other chip suppliers looking to have TSMC build their 28nm products end up fighting for the remaining small portion of the foundry's 28nm capacity, the sources said.

TSMC previously reiterated that its supply of 28nm chips would come close to catching up with demand in the last quarter of 2012, and satisfy demand completely by the first quarter of next year.

TSMC at its most-recent investors meeting also predicted that sales of 28nm would likely account for 20% of company revenues by the end of 2012. The foundry initially estimated the process would contribute 10% of 2012 revenues.
