I have downloaded a simple app to control hidden system preferences that works great and is free.

Tinkertool will allow you to change a large number of system settings at will including screen capture type which is png by default.

The big plus of the internet is if you can't find an answer in the built in help file, a simple search will bring up more options than I usually care to read and some are actually helpful.
