I am not a believer in entertainers serving as role models or ‘idols’ for the younger generation. But the results of the competition on American Idol last night were refreshing.

The winner, Phillip Phillips, is (and was, from the outset of the competition) a clean-cut, humble young man with a style all his own.

Not only does he have an incredible musical gift, but he acknowledges that gift with a sense of humility.

Upon winning the competition last night, he was asked to sing the song that will be his first single release. He began doing so, and then broke down with emotion. He continued to attempt to sing, but could not do so. Instead … embarrassed … he handed his guitar to someone and then made his way down into the audience, found his family, and gave them a hug in appreciation for all that they have done in support of him.

Normally, the winner sings his/her song, basking in the glow of the moment, and sometimes tinged with a bit of arrogance. What a refreshing break from that pattern it was to see this young man overcome with humility, and wanting to show appreciation to his family.
