WESTBOROUGH, Mass., May 2, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Viking Systems, Inc. ( VKNG.OB - News), a leading worldwide developer, manufacturer and marketer of 3D and 2D visualization solutions for complex minimally invasive surgery, today announced that Parma Community General Hospital is the first hospital in the greater Cleveland area to integrate Viking Systems' 3DHD Vision System into its operating room.
The 3DHD Vision System provides the hospital with a true 3D laparoscopic operating suite. Before laparoscopic surgery surgeons performed open procedures and were able to view a patient's anatomy in three dimensions using their eyes. However, with the advent of laparoscopic surgery, visualization of the anatomy was reduced to two dimensions with the surgeon giving up 3D vision for the patient benefits offered by minimally invasive laparoscopy. Some surgical specialties have been re-introduced to the benefits of 3D vision through robotic surgical systems. Now laparoscopic visualization has come full circle with the introduction of a stand-alone 3D visualization system.
"Operating with 3DHD is the best of both worlds," says Carson Wong, MD, FRCSC, FACS, medical director of the Center for Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery at Parma Community General Hospital. "Our patients continue to experience the benefits of laparoscopic surgery, while our surgeons gain the critical depth perception we lost with conventional 2D laparoscopy."
The new 3DHD Vision System platform is cutting edge technology providing surgeons with crisp, clear HD visualization combined with depth perception. The added dimension visually assists laparoscopic surgeons in dissection, suturing and in identifying critical anatomy sometimes not discernible with traditional laparoscopic visualization systems.
Jed Kennedy, President and CEO of Viking System, said, "3D visualization technology has been developed and refined over the past 10 years. We are pleased to be the leader in this area. Hospitals like Parma Community General Hospital see the value this technology brings to the operating room and understand that being on the front of the technology curve is of value to not only the surgeons and the hospital but also to the patient. It is more important than ever for hospitals to be able to embrace new technology that brings substantial value at a reasonable price point. Our 3DHD Vision Systems offer both." |
