I think that displays on mobile gadgets still have one big advance, and that is glasses free, 3D. The technology exists, but it is very expensive. I suspect Apple will do that within a couple of years on the iPad, and perhaps iPhone lines. That would also make stereo cameras common on these gadgets. However, the bump in GPU performance needed is not great, and indeed some of the ARM SOC GPUs already support 3D displays. Not sure about camera interfaces, but again, this will not use much compute power.

Other than that, we must wait for more innovation in UI designs such as more accurate and natural speech or gestures, or just plain more AI in apps to drive a need on the CPU side. I think there is lots of potential, but the problem is software, not hardware. Software must lead if hardware evolution is going to be needed.

Otherwise what will happen is $600 phones are headed towards be $50 phones in a few years. We need compelling improvements in use...
