There's fiber to nearly every continent on the planet now (accept Antarctica) submarinecablemap.com  What's the footprint of a gateway? How far apart can they be to get continuous coverage?


I see your point that if you need a lot of ground stations to cover the oceans, that would be a huge investment. That makes sense why Iridium chose to go with a system whereby they could use the other satellites as relays.
