It looks like Google got it right.

Freedrive, which offered up to 50 megabytes of free storage space and eventually attracted 20 million users, was a decade too early.

Freedrive got eaten alive by huge bandwidth and storage costs, neither one of which is an issue today. Clunky software and a lack of a revenue model did not help.
