I have a nephew who is a young pharmacist. He seems not very happy about the outlook which you describe... trying to make his way into the academic world, into something closer to patient care. Some years back I tried to convince him to go to med school, but the idealistic kid was seriously into chemistry and science, and wouldn't listen.
