for all the hype the bloggers are giving windows 8 it's basically a cash cow replacement product that is massive in scale. people assume there is a lot of upgrade revenue at stake with windows. but it's tiny. msft makes it's money from windows when people go out and buy a New pc or laptop, and not from people upgrading an Existing computer. Now with win 8 they will get revenue when people buy tablets. it's a gigantic money maker. it's like a software utility. it's just there. it's inevitable at this point. at some point most of their corporate windows revenue will be under perpetual contract, like the power company.

they just need to not blow windows 8 so that people locked into the ecosystem already, will buy an new pc from HP or Dell instead of Apple. when windows 8 ships there will be about 10 days of news flow out of it before they move onto whatever apple or goog are doing next. it's such a ho hum boring category now. msft can't give up on windows. it's too important a utility to commerce and consumers.
