Why couldn't I have had someone like you in Freshman English? The teacher I had was horrible. And I don't think it was just that I had a problem with authority at the time, though I did. It was her. If I hadn't already been completely in love with the English language by that time, she would have ruined it for me. I loved my biology teacher. He was brilliant and funny in a way that most of the class didn't get. I'd sit there cracking up constantly, and my fellow students thought I was crazy. As an example, one time he said that anyone who had lived in Phoenix for any length of time had probably had something they thought was a minor cold, but was actually Valley Fever. "It's caused by microscopic spores in the air," he told us. Then, pointing with his piece of chalk, he said, "There's one. There's another one." And everybody was looking where he pointed to try to see them. I was howling. He just gave me one of his little smiles. He liked the fact that I always got his jokes. Good teachers make such a huge difference.
