Nomura Securities on Global Software: Bridging the Gap in Apple (AAPL) and Microsoft (MSFT) Product Lines

Nomura Securities on Global Software: Bridging the Gap in Apple and Microsoft Product Lines.

Analyst, Rick Sherlund, said, "We expect that Steve Ballmer may attend the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) session on Feb 27th to announce availability of the Tango low-cost version of Windows Phone 7.5, but also possibly the change in kernel to Windows 8 that may break binary compatibility with Mango and Tango. Also, the Windows 8 consumer preview release event on February 29th should be positive, showing new features in Windows 8. We discuss how Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) delivers compatibility across its products with Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 and we look at Apple s (Nasdaq: AAPL) options and issues this may create as it tries to offer some consistency in apps and user experience across the iOS platform of iPhone and iPad and the Mac OS X. We think Apple s new Mountain Lion is more of a pussy-cat in terms of what it accomplishes in delivering real cross platform compatibility and consistency of user experience relative to what Apple will want to accomplish longer term. We think the Windows 8 code is likely in good shape and have adjusted our earnings model to reflect upgrade coupons."
