The results of my independent testing (tm) are exactly as you describe - when you hit the video on the iPhone 4S it opens the video in full screen and plays GREAT and FAST. When you hit video on iPad2 it plays GREAT and FAST "inline" of the webpage.

(caps added for emphasis and to further agitate the haters)
