A caller on Wind Tunnel this evening had a decent suggestion to deal with the plate issue. Remove some of the downforce and run narrower tires. I think he also said remove the plate.

Surprisingly, later in the show Mario A said about the same thing about the Indy cars on most ovals.

In both cases, the cars would not be able to run wide open all the way around the track. Handling and driver ability would become more critical and separate the field much more.
