<<La. readies to open spillway, flood Cajun country

Horrific. So much good farmland has been damaged by this epic flooding.>>

Something I wonder about. Floods have traditionally been a way to enrich farm land e.g. the Nile. Every year the Nile used to flood and bring fresh soil to the farms along the Nile.

Won't the Mississippi bring new soil to the farms? I am sure there is a difference in the above comparison, but I don't know what it is.

When a river runs free and is pristine, it carries topsoil to its mouth forming deltas......hence the agricultural delta in Egypt. It can also enrich farmland as well when it overflows its banks. However, the Mississippi does not run free. It is weighted down with contaminants.....chemicals, oil, toxic wastes and sewerage. When it floods farmland, it damages the land rather than enhancing it.
