I don't think the Verizon experience bears that out. NPD's report today implies that Android sold 10 million phones in the US last quarter-- I don't see how that can reach that number without having Verizon sales that beat the iPhone's 2.2 million.
Bluster and fanboyism aside, there's no denying that Android has comsumer appeal, and it's not just as an iPhone alternative. When given a choice, some people are legitimately choosing Android.
However, it is telling that although Android has outsold the iPhone 2:1 per Sly's link, Android and the iPhone are roughly equal in terms of "desirability," indicating that half of Android buyers are doing so under duress :)
