To be blunt, when you think about it, talking about sports at all can be considered a total waste of time. Does it really matter who we think will win a game? Does it really matter to pinpoint why a team lost, or who played well and who did not? We do it for pure entertainment. Heck, when we say "How are you?" do we really care to hear why said person is having a bad day? It can be argued most of what we say or do is a waste of time. In that respect, having pure fun (like watching sports, a TV show or movie, reading a book, etc) is a waste of time, as compared to, say, hunting/gathering food and providing shelter from the elements.

How's that for philosophy?!

The point being that the entire fun of having a contest is to be able to brag how you are doing compared to your friends, right? Does it really matter? Of course not. But ragging on someone for losing is entertainment. I would also argue that the closer a friend someone is, the more you rag on them.

JMHO of course.
