In my opinion, the exchange sided with the program sellers who sold too low, because of automatic computerized stop loss programs at the expense of the buyers.

They probably got a call from big clients, complaining that buy/sell orders were not lined up fast enough, triggering huge losses for them. The opportunistic buyers didn't "deserve" the windfall.

So they screwed the low buyers, and sided with the program sellers.

That is my take on things.
