Flash memory prices rebound at month end

Prices for DRAM and NAND flash memories used in personal computers and other smart devices were generally looking up at the end of January this year, according to a TrendForce survey.

A strong recent rebound in DRAM retail prices after its worst drop of nearly 50 percent during the fourth quarter last year sent stocks of many DRAM chip and memory module makers up yesterday, with Nanya Technology and Unifosa leading the rally and topping their respective stop-limits at NT$18.45 and NT$47.15 yesterday. The rebound was widely seen as the beginning of a sustained upward adjustment in DRAM prices for the months ahead.

Brand name DDR3 1GB retail prices were up 8.22 percent to US$1.13 yesterday, according to the survey, while eTT (effectively tested, full specification unmarked) units of the same capacity also went up an average of 7.89 percent to US$0.9 yesterday.

On the flash memory front, NAND contract prices remained largely flat for the second half of January. Popular models like the 32GB MLC (multi-level cell) and 32GB TLC (three-level cell) units were priced at US$5.38 and US$4.3, respectively, about the same as the first half of January.

“Strong demands from smart phones and tablet computers, plus the recent power outage in a Toshiba production plant that resulted in a cut in supply, will drive up the NANA flash memory prices even when January is traditionally considered a weak season for the products,” said the survey, “and trend most likely will continue for the entire first quarter this year.”
